সুন্দরবনের রহস্যময় অরণ্যের গভীরে, হিরণ পয়েন্ট ও কালাবগি ফরেষ্ট অফিসের মাঝামাঝি অঞ্চলে অবস্থিত এক নিস্তব্ধ স্থান—শেখেরটেক মন্দির। নদী, খাল আর ম্যানগ্রোভ গাছে ঘেরা এই স্থানটি শুধু একটি দর্শনীয় স্পট নয়, এটি সুন্দরবনের মানুষের শত বছরের বিশ্বাস ও বেঁচে থাকার ইতিহাসের নীরব সাক্ষী।

শেখেরটেক মূলত হিন্দু ধর্মাবলম্বীদের একটি ছোট শিপ মন্দির হিসাবে পরিচিত এবং গবেষকদের তথ্য মতে এই মন্দিরটি ৪০০ বছরেরও বেশি পুরনো ও এই মন্দিরটি আমাদের প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শনের একটি অংশ। আর বছরে একবার অনেক হিন্দু পূর্নার্থী/তীর্থযাত্রী এখানে আসে পূর্ন অর্জনের জন্য এবং শ্রদ্ধাঞ্জলী দেয়। যেখানে হিন্দু-মুসলিম নির্বিশেষে মানুষ শ্রদ্ধা জানায়। লোক কথা অনুযায়ী, বহু বছর আগে এই অঞ্চলে বসবাস করতেন এক ধর্মপ্রাণ সাধক—যাকে সবাই “শেখ” নামে চিনত। তিনি বনজীবীদের রক্ষা, বিপদ থেকে মুক্তি এবং প্রকৃতির সাথে শান্তিপূর্ণ সহাবস্থানের জন্য প্রার্থনা করতেন। তাঁর স্মৃতিতেই গড়ে ওঠে শেখেরটেক, যা পরবর্তীতে বনবিবির কাহিনির সঙ্গে গভীরভাবে জড়িয়ে পড়ে।

সুন্দরবনে কাজ করতে আসা জেলে, মৌয়াল ও বাওয়ালিরা আজও বিশ্বাস করেন—

বনে প্রবেশের আগে শেখেরটেকে মাথা নত না করলে যাত্রা অসম্পূর্ণ থেকে যায়।

কারণ সুন্দরবন শুধু বন নয়—এটি রয়্যাল বেঙ্গল টাইগারের আবাস।

টাইগার এখানে শুধু একটি প্রাণী নয়, এটি ভয়, শ্রদ্ধা আর শক্তির প্রতীক।

বনের মানুষদের মুখে শোনা যায় বহু গল্প—

কখনো হঠাৎ ঝোপের আড়াল থেকে বাঘের নিঃশব্দ দৃষ্টি,

কখনো কুয়াশাভেজা ভোরে নদীর ধারে বাঘের পায়ের ছাপ।

এক বৃদ্ধ জেলে বলেন.....

“আমরা জানি বাঘ আমাদের শত্রু না।

বাঘ এই বনের পাহারাদার।

আমরা ভুল করলে সে আসে।”

এই বিশ্বাস থেকেই সুন্দরবনের মানুষ বাঘকে “দক্ষিণ রায়” বা বনবিবির সৈনিক বলে মনে করে। শেখেরটেকে এসে তারা প্রার্থনা করে—যাতে বনে কাজ করতে গিয়ে বাঘের সামনে পড়লেও জীবন রক্ষা পায়।

শেখেরটেকের সবচেয়ে বিস্ময়কর দিক হলো—

এখানে কোনো ধর্মীয় বিভেদ নেই।

একই জায়গায় জ্বলে ধূপ, দেওয়া হয় মানত, বলা হয় দোয়া।

কারণ বনের ভেতর মানুষের পরিচয় একটাই—বেঁচে থাকা।

আজ যখন পর্যটকরা নৌপথে শেখেরটেকে পৌঁছান,

চারপাশের নিস্তব্ধতা, বাতাসে ভাসমান বিশ্বাস আর বনের গভীর সবুজ

মনে করিয়ে দেয়—

সুন্দরবন শুধু প্রকৃতির নয়, এটি গল্পে গড়া এক জীবন্ত ইতিহাস।

Shekhertek (Shiva Temple): A Story of Faith, Forest, and Human Life in the Sundarbans

Deep within the mysterious forests of the Sundarbans, between Hiron Point and the Kalabogi Forest Office, lies a quiet and sacred place—Shekhertek Temple. Surrounded by rivers, canals, and mangrove trees, this site is not merely a tourist attraction; it is a silent witness to centuries of belief and the struggle for survival of the people of the Sundarbans.

Shekhertek is primarily known as a small Shiva temple of the Hindu faith. According to researchers, the temple is more than 400 years old and is considered an important archaeological and cultural heritage site. Once a year, many Hindu pilgrims visit this place to seek spiritual merit and offer their श्रद्धা (homage). Notably, people from both Hindu and Muslim communities come here to pay respect.

According to local folklore, many years ago a deeply spiritual ascetic lived in this region, known simply as “Sheikh.” He prayed for the protection of forest-dependent communities, for safety from danger, and for peaceful coexistence with nature. In his memory, Shekhertek was established, which later became deeply connected with the legends of Bonbibi.

Even today, fishermen, honey collectors (mouals), and woodcutters (bawalis) who come to work in the Sundarbans firmly believe that—

entering the forest without bowing one’s head at Shekhertek leaves the journey incomplete.

Because the Sundarbans is not just a forest—it is the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger.

Here, the tiger is not merely an animal; it is a symbol of fear, reverence, and power.

Many stories circulate among forest workers—

sometimes a silent gaze of a tiger from behind dense bushes,

sometimes fresh tiger footprints along the riverbank in a misty morning.

An elderly fisherman once said:

“We know the tiger is not our enemy.

The tiger is the guardian of this forest.

It comes only when we make mistakes.”

From this belief, the people of the Sundarbans regard the tiger as ‘Dakshin Ray’ or a soldier of Bonbibi. They pray at Shekhertek so that even if they encounter a tiger while working in the forest, their lives may be spared.

The most remarkable aspect of Shekhertek is that—

there is no religious division here.

Incense is lit, vows are offered, and prayers are spoken in the same place.

Because inside the forest, human identity is singular—survival.

Today, when tourists arrive at Shekhertek by boat, the surrounding silence, the faith floating in the air, and the deep green of the forest remind them that—

the Sundarbans is not only a natural wonder; it is a living history shaped by stories and belief.

Shekhertek Temple teaches us—

not to conquer nature,

but to live with faith and harmony alongside it.

That is the true meaning of the Sundarbans.
